John Porhamer was born and raised in Arkansas. After graduating from college with a degree in mathematics; to meet his military obligation, John served as an officer in the US Air Force. While stationed at Carswell AFB, John met his future wife, the former Ann Roach, a TCU graduate. They were married 49 years as of April 6, 2023. After separating from the Air Force in 1975, John entered the insurance business.
For the next 20 years or so, John focused mostly on life insurance. After repeatedly being asked about health insurance by individuals wanting to protect their families and business owners wanting to offer group medical coverage for their employees, John directed more of his attention to health insurance. While life insurance is still in our portfolio, we place most of our emphasis on medical insurance, including Medicare for seniors. It was during this time that John became more acclimated to the Fort Worth lifestyle and started wearing cowboy boots and a western hat. He changed the name of his business to Cowtown Insurance Service in 2000 and incorporated in 2003. Our purpose is to help our clients provide their families and employees the protection and security they need in order to grow and profit in this great Texas economy.
At Cowtown Insurance Service, Inc., we believe in contributing back to the community. John has been a proud member of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce since 2003 and is also an Action Ambassador. He has been chosen Action Ambassador of the year twice and has also received the prestigious Charles M. Cox Award for service. John also is a volunteer at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. He is a Team Captain in the Rodeo X, which takes place the first Thursday of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.
In 2021, I was selected as an extra as a cowboy in the Yellowstone prequel, “1883”. If you look closely in the opening scenes of Hells Half Acre in the first episode, you will see me roaming the streets in full cowboy costume. A once in a lifetime experience, I will never forget!
